Firefox 3 vs Firefox 2
Wednesday, July 9, 2008
As a royal user of Firefox, I started to use it since it initially lunched in 2004. The clear and neat design, user friendly interface, multi tab arrangement, …, a lot of good features satisfied me as a critical UE expert.
However, the Firefox version 3 is very disappointing me. It polished in such a way that it looks like IE, and a lot of bugs such as disable the kingsoft powerword software.
Why couldn’t we have things just simple and do the job? It took me some effect to uninstall v3 and reinstall v2. And of course, to write this complaining blog.

MSN Space photo album
Friday, April 13, 2007
I start to hate using MSN Space especially the photo album. It took me 45 mins to upload my photo (about 23 pieces) and add descriptions. I wonder if MSN Space have usability engineer. They even use different methods for IE and Firefox. It is almost impossible to upload photos in Firefox, 90% of time, after you carefully select your photos and push ‘upload’, an error screen will appear and says something like ‘service is not available, please try later’. Apparently, this ‘later’ never comes so easy.
Ok, you have to switch back to IE, by installing a special software which supports you to upload photos, you feel so happy now. BUT, the pain in ass just comes after that, when you want to type in descriptions for your photo. The arrow key of keyboard is designed for select different photos but not navigation of the words you just typed in. It forces you to use mouse to select the position before you can type words. Another funny and annoying thing is when you want to delete one words or your sentence, you usually select the words or sentence you want to delete and press ‘delete’. Ah Ha, a pop up window is appear and asking you if you are sure to delete the photo. GOD, what is the logic behind this design rules?
Then, you have to switch back to Firefox, it has user friendly layout for you to type in your photo description, the latest Firefox version even supports spelling check, which is perfect.
Now, the last step comes in, ‘save your modification and close’. You feel so satisfied and happily click that button. However, after review your blog, you will get mad because the server didn’t save your photo description at all!!!!!! You have to redo all the things again.
That’s the whole story why it took me 45 mins to update my photo album with only 23 photos.
Where is the usability engineer in Microsoft?

Virus scan of email
Tuesday, March 13, 2007
I try to send some crack file via my gmail account, it is amazing that gmail can detect the content of my file even I changed the file type. It turns out that hotmail are not secure at all. After changing the file type, you can send whatever you want.

File system corrupted
I have a 20GB old removable hard disk. For some unknown reason, it doesn't work and shows file system type RAW. I know my files are still safely stored inside the hard disk, just the file system was corrupted.
It costs me a few nights to recover it. Basically I don't want to pay the money (around 80 euro) for any commercial product. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any open source software for data recover. At the end, I decide to use an i**egal version from Internet (Thanks to Google, I even comments to my friend that without internet, without Goolge, I can not even alive for one day. Although it sounds a little bit exaggerated, but I believe a lot of people have the same feeling like me).
To end this blog, the software is 'getDataBack for FAT32'. Please forgive me as a poor trainee. :)

Blogger vs Msn space
Tuesday, February 13, 2007
[Old blog on 22-05-2006 @Orange is me]
I just realize Msn space is not easy to use compare with Blogger. Blogger has unbeatable speed of uploading photos and refreshing after changes. For example, this blog is created just for waiting my Msn space finish uploading a photo. The convenient interface enables you upload photo, create and edit posts easily. It even provides a simple template which helps you to organize your photo and text.
Of course, Msn space also has its respectable features, such as viewing photos like slide show.
Looks like I have an occupational disease now, I can not prevent myself performing usability test whenever possible. So, what is the next?

Blog lover
Don't know since when I became a 'blog lover'. It is not only because I love to write, the more important fact is I'd like to apply my HTML, CSS knowledge when I design my owe blog layout.
One thing I want to comment here is the usage of blogger. In the 'Edit Html' mode, a normal paragraph break will have the same effect as '[p][/p]'. So please don't use paragraph tag anymore. Otherwise you will create two line breaks.
I will write more about different blog websites later. A quick link can be found in the sidebar "Blogs".

Bug of Mozilla Thunderbird for Chinese email attachment
[Old blog on 13-05-2006 @Orange is me]
Thunderbird is my favorite email client. However, I found some interesting things while using it today. We all know that English version of windows XP support Asian language input. You can type and view Asian characters after install CJK language package, which is quite convenient for people like me.
Today, I'm trying to send an email with an Word attachment both name and content written in Chinese using Mozilla Thunderbird and using UTF-8 for character encoding. Some strange things happened.
- Sina: You can not see the attachment at all.
- Hotmail: The attachment become like Attach.bin, and you are forced to open it with Microsoft word by using "Open with" function.
- Yahoo: It is almost same like Hotmail, the attachment become like File.bin.
- Gmail: The attached word file's name changed to gibberish name, but you can still open it as normal.
I believe the problem is caused by Thunderbird, it only encode the email content with UTF-8 while not the name of the attachment. Then the above email system can not recognize the attachment correctly.
Looks like Gmail is slightly superior than the other email systems. Maybe it is because my outgoing SMTP server is Gmail in Thunderbird. A conclusion for comparation of different email system is far to reach.
